Low sensory / relaxed, Seating availableIn Circular, Daniel Boddam’s reimagined furniture pieces explore the transformational potential of waste materials gleaned from construction sites and the fashion industry. Boddam finds beauty in the remnants, repurposing them into refined sculptural and functional objects. In turn, he challenges the production norms of luxury commodities and where we find and attribute value.
Boddam’s pieces are often inspired by nature. At times it’s an abstract interpretation, whereby the rhythm of undulating waves becomes a curvaceous sofa. At others, it’s about the natural material itself, especially those that have undergone captivating natural transformations, such as spalted beech – a timber known for its marbled look created by the delicate workings of fungi. In Circular, Boddam continues these fascinations in his collaboration with Jessie French, whose painterly and innovative explorations with renewable algae offer the potential for a post-petrochemical world. The exhibition also features the work of artist Jamie North whose sculptural forms, often made from industrial waste, become a habitat for indigenous plants and organic matter.
Together, the works in Circular find their form in the discards (circling back) or renewable materials (circling forward).

Establishing his eponymous studio in 2013, Daniel Boddam continuously explores what he terms “the poetry of reduction” – a belief that a sense of calm and wellbeing can be achieved through design. Regardless of expression – architecture, interiors or furniture design – the studio seeks to inspire tactile and thoughtful engagement. Supporting locally made and sustainable design is a key priority within the studio. As part of this philosophy, Boddam champions craft and collaboration with artisans and artists alike.
Jessie French is an artist and experimental designer based in Melbourne (Naarm/Birrarung-ga). Housed within an ethos of consumption, sustainability and regeneration, her practice invites engagement with the possibilities of a post-petrochemical world. Through experimenting with materials, she explores the potential of closed-loop systems, re(use), conscious consumption and interaction with objects. In 2020, French founded OTHER MATTER, an experimental design studio working with algae-based bioplastics which tangibly explores application of new materials she develops through objects, experiences and futures.
The work of Jamie North considers human culture as an integral part of the natural world. His sculptural amalgams of cement, industrial waste, and metal, present as eroded geometries, often welcoming the growth of indigenous plant species and other biotas. Jamie North has exhibited widely, most notably at The Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland, The National Gallery of Victoria and the 20th Biennale of Sydney. Jamie North is represented in Australia by The Renshaws’ in Brisbane.
