Edwin Fox joins forces with Mid-Century restoration expert Richard Lloyd from MCM Furniture Restoration for a rare opportunity to explore the world of furniture restoration.

Join Edwin and Richard at the Abbotsford Convent over three days where they will co-present, discuss, and demonstrate in Preserving the Past | Mid Century Restoration Vol:3. Whether you’re curious about the restoration process, eager to refine your skills, or simply passionate about mid-century furniture, all skill levels are encouraged to participate, from novices to seasoned enthusiasts.

The event kicks off on Friday evening, May 24th and continues through the weekend. They’ll be hosting five identical three-hour demonstrations and workshops in the morning and afternoon.

Led by their expert team, these sessions will offer comprehensive insights into the methods, skills, and practices employed in the restoration industry. Attendees will learn a step-by-step approach to restoring and revitalising their mid-century furniture.

  • Discover the dos and don’ts of various finishes, including varnishes, stains, oils, and polishes.

Participants

Edwin Fox

Edwin is a multidisciplinary skilled restorer and artisan, with an educational history in Fine Art with a First Class Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Graphic Communication. Edwin also has a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in traditional upholstery. More recently Edwin has channelled his skills and energy into the physical aspects of design, whereby his career has now evolved into the art of furniture restoration. Edwin currently runs a small independent business restoring and selling furniture and lighting here in Melbourne. He hopes that through his work, he can connect the importance of sustainability, reducing waste while working with incredible items of our past. Edwin has worked along side other collaborative educational events and has been involved with; the Robin Boyd Foundation and is an active partner with mid century heritage group Beaumaris Modern. Edwin is also part of Melbourne’s long standing cornerstone for furniture design buyers, the Smith St Bazaar, in Fitzroy.

Richard Lloyd

Richard Lloyd’s journey from a collector and enthusiast of mid-century furniture to a professional restorer showcases his passion for preserving and revitalising these iconic pieces. Based in Northcote, Melbourne, Richard’s commitment to eco-friendly restoration sets him apart in the industry. With a focus on eliminating harmful chemicals from traditional restoration processes, Richard’s workshop offers exclusive eco-friendly refinishing services. His dedication to sustainability not only benefits the environment but also ensures a safer and healthier approach to furniture restoration. In addition to his restoration services, Richard now offers group workshops and private assistance to share his knowledge and skills with others. This initiative demonstrates his commitment to preserving mid-century craftsmanship by passing on techniques and methods to future generations of enthusiasts and artisans. Richard’s dedication to excellence, sustainability, and education makes him a valuable asset to the mid-century furniture community in Melbourne and beyond.
