Squiggles and Cubes is an assembly of art, design and playful collaboration that forms a space of respite through the presentation of thoughtful and pleasant objects.
Hosted in the Tie Factory, a historic Carlton warehouse, Squiggles and Cubes is a collection of functional sculptures informed by, and responding to, the art practice of Meagan Streader and the furniture designs of Billy Horn. Meagan and Billy are inspired by the idea of testing materials, exercising different techniques and playing with aesthetics. With this spirit they have created a collection of lights, sculptures, furniture and objects.
This exhibition has been generously supported by VNTNR, Inner North Brewing Co, MARS Gallery and Banco Group.
Participants
Meagan Streader pushes the limits of light within sculpture and installation by manipulating, reinterpreting and extending upon the boundaries of constructed spaces. Through site-specific interventions, her multidimensional use of light re-orientates the viewer’s relationship to the pre-existing architecture and scale of a given space. In this way, Meagan’s work reveals the pervasive role of light in governing physical and social navigations of fabricated spaces. Meagan is currently based in Melbourne (Naarm/Birrarung-ga) and is represented by MARS Gallery.
Billy Horn is a machinist and fabricator operating a workshop in Brunswick where he designs and makes objects for Melbourne’s vibrant art and design industry. Now making his own work, Billy contrasts the serious with the silly, the bright with the dull, the cheap with the premium and the luxurious with the sensible. His focus is on making functional, practical pieces brimming with playfulness – furniture and objects crafted with a wink.
