Wheelchair accessibleLong Prawn and food history expert Jan O’Connell host a cultural ‘passeggiata’ for MDW guests: a walking meal allowing for a variance in pace, taste, texture, context and historic tales. From the defiance of the dim sim, to the once widely popular chop picnic; enjoy food yarns attached to place and time. With body and digestion in motion together, convivial culinary rest and snack stops will take place throughout the former Gold Street Precinct in Collingwood.
The ticket includes refreshments, snacks and discussions at each stop; including dim sims with Singaporean cottage conservationist Andrew Muir, Jalan Kayu roti prata with Alan and Carol Han from The Old Raffles Place, and a panino with Stef Condello of Stefanino Panino.
The event pauses to recognise that all food grown, shared and consumed here does so on unceded Aboriginal land. And that this place remains to be an important place to the longest-living food culture in the world, a culture rich in techniques of cooking, trading, farming and preserving. First Nations people may attend this event for free.
Research and support for this event was made possible through collaborators Molonglo.

As well as writing about Australia’s food history on her website, australianfoodtimeline.com.au, Jan O’Connell has spent more than four decades in the ad business as a writer and creative director, working on everything from paint to cars, from yoghurt to finance. Her ability to craft a story out of history is ever exciting. Jan has picked up a few awards, including the Mad Men’s coveted gold Clio. Her first book, Me and My Big Mouth, was a food memoir about the revolution in Australian food that occurred during the baby boomers’ lifetime. The second book, A Timeline of Australian Food: From Mutton to MasterChef, was released in 2017 through NewSouth Publishing.
Molonglo sees property development as the willing of architecture into being; from an abstraction of drawings and ideas into something to be touched and lived in. Molonglo does this through property development and investment, research and publishing, in Australia and Greece. Wandering OFF Menu (2) takes place in the neighbourhood of Public Office, a new centre for creative work Molonglo is working on in Collingwood.
